Contractor websites that get you past the price question.

Nobody hands over $40,000 to a company whose last website update was in 2016. Contracting is a trust sale with a long fuse — we build the site that survives three weeks of comparison shopping and makes the estimate feel like a formality.

Buyer Behaviour

How construction customers actually search

This is the opposite of HVAC. Almost nothing here is an emergency. Somebody has been thinking about the kitchen for two years, they finally search, and then they spend two to three weeks looking at portfolios, checking licences, reading reviews and collecting three estimates. The search that starts the process and the call that ends it are often a month apart.

That long window changes what the site is for. It is not catching a thirty-second decision — it is surviving repeated visits and side-by-side comparison. Your prospect will open your site and two competitors' in adjacent tabs, and the differences they notice are photography quality, whether the work shown resembles the job they want, and whether anything makes them doubt you're licensed and insured.

The third pattern is that most of your best leads arrive already knowing your name. Referral and word-of-mouth traffic searches your company directly — which means your branded search results, your Google Business Profile and your review count are doing as much work as any keyword. A referral who looks you up and finds a dated site quietly becomes a lost referral, and you never hear about it.

What one customer is worth

$4,000 bathroom → $85,000+ full renovation or new build

One recovered project pays for a site several times over, which makes contracting the trade where a redesign is easiest to justify on arithmetic alone. It also means a bad lead is expensive in a different way — an unqualified estimate costs you a site visit, a measure-up and half a day.

What you’re up against

  • Contracting is the most crowded trade on Long Island and the least professionally marketed. Most competitors have a template site, no service-level pages and no review process — so the bar for outranking them is depth rather than budget. Six properly written service pages will beat a competitor's single services page almost every time.
  • The aggregators are heavier here than anywhere else. Angi, Houzz, HomeAdvisor and Porch dominate the generic head terms and monetise by selling the same lead to four contractors. Competing on "contractor Long Island" is a losing fight; competing on "kitchen remodel Suffolk County" and specific job types is winnable, because that is where they are thin.
  • Seasonality is real but softer than HVAC — exterior work clusters in spring and summer, interior work fills winter. The practical consequence is that content planning matters: deck and roofing pages want to be ranking by March, kitchen and basement pages by October.
The Build

What a contracting business site has to get right

These are the decisions that separate a contracting business site that produces work from one that just exists. They are specific to this trade — a contractor site and an HVAC site want opposite things.

  • Portfolio organised by job type, not by date

Somebody wanting a deck should reach deck work in one click. A reverse-chronological gallery makes them hunt, and they don't — they leave.

  • Licence, insurance and bonding above the fold

Suffolk County licence number, insurance status, and any manufacturer certifications. This is the first thing a cautious homeowner checks and the cheapest objection to remove.

  • Quote forms that qualify before you drive out

Job type, scope, timeline, rough budget band. A form that captures only a name and number fills your week with site visits that were never going to close.

  • Reviews tied to specific projects

"Great work, highly recommend" persuades nobody. A review attached to the job it describes, next to photos of that job, does the whole trust argument for you.

  • One page per service, properly written

Kitchens, baths, additions, decks, roofing, electrical — each is a separate search with separate intent. A single "Services" page ranks for none of them.

  • Photography treated as the product

Your photos are the entire sales argument, and phone photos are fine if they're handled properly — correctly sized, fast-loading, with before-and-after pairs where you have them.

A portfolio-led rebuild with work organised by job type rather than date, licence and insurance surfaced in the header, and a qualifying quote form that captures scope and budget band before the site visit. We also built Certified Electricians of LI on the same pattern — trade-specific service pages, local SEO, and trust signals placed where the hesitation actually happens.

Questions

Questions from contractors

No — phone photos are what most of our contractor clients have, and handled properly they work fine. What matters is that they're sized and compressed correctly so galleries load fast, and that they're organised by job type. If you have before-and-after pairs, those are worth more than professional photography of the finished job alone.
